Sensual Studies
by Alyssa
Sensual Studies is a personal writing and publishing project exploring sexuality, embodiment, and sensual self-discovery. Through feminist and sex-positive zines, essays, and digital content, I wanted to create a space to question what we've been taught about sex and learn to more confidently connect with a claim our bodies and desires. I want to challenge harmful narratives about sex and replace them with informed, affirming, and empowering perspectives. Ultimately, I want to help create and nurture a sexually healthy and liberated community. My work explores sexual communication, pleasure, embodiment, and the ways we come to understand ourselves as sexual beings. Through this work, I aim to challenge stigma, support self-definition, and help individuals build more confident, connected relationships with their bodies and desires.
I use storytelling as the foundation of my work because stories are often how people actually connect to information. A lot of traditional sex education focuses on biology, prevention, or clinical language, but it rarely makes space for the emotional, social, and cultural realities that shape how we experience sex, relationships, intimacy, and identity. Sharing my own experiences, reflections, and lessons I’ve learned allows me to approach these topics in a way that feels more honest, relatable, and human. Much of what people learn about sex comes from stories already—through television, film, social media, relationships, family dynamics, and cultural expectations. I want to build on that understanding by using personal storytelling to start conversations about communication, consent, pleasure, shame, representation, and the ways we internalize messages about sexuality. I believe people want to engage with educational material when they can see themselves reflected in it. Talking openly about experiences, mistakes, growth, or the process of unlearning harmful ideas can make conversations about sex feel less isolating and more accessible. Rather than presenting myself as someone with all the answers, I approach sex education as an ongoing conversation rooted in curiosity, self-reflection, and shared learning.
Feminist and Sex-Positive Zines
I create and use zines as a creative, accessible way to turn sex education and ideas into engaging, visually compelling stories. My zines blend writing, research, design, and playful visual storytelling to explore topics ranging from sex education and sexual communication to media representation and feminist advocacy.
I create and use zines to make information feel more approachable and personal, creating something that encourages people to slow down, engage, and see themselves in the conversation.
Sex-Positive Snail Mail Club
Sensual Studies’ Sex-Positive Snail Mail Club is a creative community-building project that combines sex education, writing, design, and the nostalgia of physical mail. Inspired by my work as a Certified Holistic Sex Educator, I created the club as a playful way to nurture a sexually healthy, curious, and liberated community outside of traditional educational spaces. Each piece of mail is designed to spark curiousity, encourage reflection, and make conversations about sexuality feel a little more fun, approachable, and human.
